AES Researchers Celebrated at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's 2025 Bravo Gala

Each year, ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's Office of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) hosts the Bravo Gala to celebrate faculty members and researchers who have earned major provincial, national, and international prizes. This year, the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (AES) is proud to have nine members honoured among ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's brightest research leaders. Their work spans food safety, plant science, nutrition, material engineering, animal science, ornithology, and agricultural communication.

Xin Zhao, Distinguished James ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Professor in the Department of Animal Science, was named a Fellow of the American Dairy Science Association in recognition of more than 20 years of distinguished service and exceptional contributions to lactation physiology, mastitis research, antimicrobial resistance, and gut health. He has mentored over 100 graduate students and authored more than 280 refereed journal articles.

Jaswinder Singh, Professor in the Department of Plant Science, received the Mary E. Spencer Award from the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists for outstanding contributions to plant biology and public service engagement. His research focuses on crop genomics and biotechnology to improve yield stability, environmental resilience, and grain quality.

Treena Wasonti:io Delormier, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Nutrition in the School of Human Nutrition, received the D2R Genomic Medicine and Indigenous Health Award at the 2025 Rendez-Vous Génome Québec. The award recognized her project examining how culturally safe research practices can help redress colonial legacies in health research with Indigenous Peoples.

Akbarzadeh Shafaroudi, Abdolhamid, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Programmable Multifunctional Metamaterials in the Department of Bioresource Engineering, was named a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. As Director of the Advanced Multifunctional and Multiphysics Metamaterials Lab (AM3L), his work in bio-inspired material design has led to eight provisional patents and 138 publications.

Pascal Thériault, Director of the Farm Management and Technology Program at Macdonald Campus, won the Prix coup-de-coeur Marc-Alain Soucy at the Moïse-Cossette competition for his column "Mes relèves, vos relèves," praised for its positive portrayal of the next generation of Quebec farmers. Pascal Thériault was also awarded this year's President’s Prize for Public Engagement Through Media.

Xiaonan Lu, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Food Safety in the Department of Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry, was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for pioneering research integrating molecular microbiology, analytical chemistry, engineering, and mathematics to address hazards across the food supply chain.

Anja Geitmann, Vice-President (Global Engagement) and Professor in the Department of Plant Science, was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her significant contributions to Canada and its communities.

Rodger Titman, Retired Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences, received the Jamie Smith Memorial Mentoring Award from the Society of Canadian Ornithologists for exceptional contributions to the training and fostering of Canadian ornithologists.

Sandy Phillips, Senior Faculty Lecturer in the Department of Human Nutrition, was named a Fellow of the Ordre des diététistes-nutritionnistes du Québec for distinguished contributions to dietetics and nutrition practice and research in the province.
