He is best known as a novelist\, most notably for The English Patie nt\, which was made into an Academy Award-winning film\, but his work also encompasses poetry\, memoir\, literary criticism\, and film.\nHe has publ ished 13 books of poetry including The Collected Works of Billy the Kid: L eft-Handed Poems (1970)\, The Cinnamon Peeler (1989)\, Handwriting (1998) and The Story (2006).  He is the author of the semi-autobiographical Runni ng in the Family (1982)\, which combines memoir\, fiction\, and photograph y.
