The Dutch constitute the lead investors within the floriculture sector in Eastern Africa\, and the Dutch government has provided investment incentiv es to Dutch companies through development-related subsidies and favorable loans. The prevalent justifications for these agro-investments have been t he perceived abundance of unused and underused tracts of arable land and t he need to bolster global food security. Private sector investments have b een proffered as apposite levers for poverty alleviation and inclusive gro wth in the sub-Saharan context. Floriculture companies\, in this regard\, can facilitate the attainment of these developmental goals through increas ed income generation via local employment\; transfer of agricultural knowl edge\; linking smallholder producers to global markets\; and earning expor t revenues for the host countries. In this talk\, I draw from the field re search I carried out in Kenya\, Tanzania\, Uganda and Ethiopia to address the following questions: how can a sector that produces an aesthetic\, ine dible\, luxury product in flowers enhance food security in food-insecure c ountries whilst competing for critical land and water resources? And how d oes employment facilitated by the availability of cheap labor enhance loca l livelihoods especially while operating within the violent global capital ism system that is underpinned by processes of ‘letting die’ (Tyner 2016)? Further\, how do floriculture investments convey an image of responsible and sustainable actors within an environment that is increasingly scrutini zed within the lens of sustainability and corporate responsibility? \n\n  \n\nLocation: Peterson Hall\, 3460 McTavish Street\, H3A 0E6\, Room 116\n \n*Due to construction\, use the left side entrance\n\nRefreshments will b e served.\n\nCentre for Society\, Technology\, and Development (STANDD)\n \nTel: 514-398-1807\n DTSTART:20161028T173000Z DTEND:20161028T183000Z LOCATION:CA\, Peterson Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, 3460 McTavish Street\, R oom 116 SUMMARY:FLOWERS FOR FOOD?
