This contentious overlap between H an and Mongol communities posed fundamental problems in governance for imp erial Japan as it expanded into the region. In response\, Japanese militar ists and Mongol leaders converged on a radical solution in 1932: Demarcati ng an autonomous territory for minority peoples in Manchukuo fifteen years before such zones would exist in the People’s Republic of China. In this talk\, Sakura Christmas explores the fraught delineation of this autonomou s territory as not only ethnic\, but also environmental in kind. In the 19 30s\, Japanese authorities relocated indigenous inhabitants and cultivated a pastoral ecology in Kingġan Province to reinforce corresponding identit ies. They viewed seasonal migration and native livestock as obstacles to e conomic autarky under fascist imperialism. Under the banner of 'improvemen t\,' they introduced engineered breeds to settle Mongol herders and maximi ze output\, which led to land degradation under the conditions of total wa r. The disastrous consequences call into question the underlying purpose o f 'improvement' heralded by agricultural science.\n DTSTART:20260224T210000Z DTEND:20260224T230000Z LOCATION:1041\, Sherbrooke 680\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2M7\, 680 rue She rbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Fascist Sheep: Land and Livestock in Inner Mongolia under Japanese Rule URL:/channels/channels/event/fascist-sheep-land-and-li vestock-inner-mongolia-under-japanese-rule-370550 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
