Roscoe Lecture “Women in Academi a:\n21st Century Challenges”\nWho: Dr. Evelynn Hammonds\, Dean\, Harvard\n College and Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz Professor of the History of\nScien ce\nWhen: Thursday\, Oct. 23\, 2008\, 6 p.m.\nWhere: Otto Maass Chemistry Building\, 801\nSherbrooke St. W.\, Room 112.\nDr. Hammonds\, a distinguis hed scholar\, teacher and\nadministrator\, has published extensively on th e history of disease\,\nrace and science\, African-American feminism\, Afr ican-American women\nand HIV/AIDS\, and analyses of gender and race in sci ence and\nmedicine. Her current work focuses on the intersection of\nscien tific\, medical\, and socio-political concepts of race in the\nUnited Stat es. She has been a visiting scholar at the Max Planck\nInstitute for the H istory of Science in Berlin and a Fellow in the\nSchool of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in\nPrinceton. In July 2005\, Dr. Hamm onds was named Senior Vice Provost\nfor Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard University. Prior\nto joining Harvard\, she taught at the Massa chusetts Institute of\nTechnology and is the founding director of the MIT Center for the\nStudy of Diversity in Science\, Technology\, and Medicine. \nThe Muriel V. Roscoe Lecture is named for a former chairperson\nof the B otany Department at Թ who was also Warden\nof Royal Victor ia College (RVC) for 22 years. Dr. Roscoe\, who was\nthe second woman in M cGill's history to be named a full professor\n(1945)\, taught at Թ fo r 27 years and her personal and\nprofessional achievements had a significa nt impact on an entire\ngeneration of Թ women.\nThe endowment for thi s lectureship was established in 1988 by\nthe Թ Alumnae Society in ce lebration of their 100th\nanniversary. The lecture seeks to stimulate deba te on issues where\nwomen have developed a special voice.
