Mor avian missionaries (a small German\nProtestant community) transcribed bibl ical texts into a written\nform of Inuttitut and were the first in Canada to write and publish\nInuttitut using Latin characters. In the early 19th century\, an\nAnglican missionary in Northern Quebec (now Nunavik) transcr ibed\nparts of these same Moravian biblical translations into syllabic\nor thography. Even more importantly\, the Moravian missionaries\nproduced tex t books for the Inuit\, allowing them to become literate\nvery early in Ca nadian history\, from the end of the 18th century.\nThe Nunatsiavut Inuit were probably more literate than most other\npeople in Canada at that time . It is a fascinating and largely\nunknown aspect of our history and of li terary history. The Labrador\nInuit were the first Inuit to have written i n their own language\nand thus constitute the beginnings of Inuit written literature in\nCanada.\nItems displayed in this exhibition have been selec ted from\nºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Library's Rare Books and Special Collections including Th e\nLawrence Lande Collection of Canadiana\, The Lande Eskimo Collection\na nd The Lande Arkin Collection\, and supplemented by the collections\nof Mc Gill Library’s Humanities & Social Sciences Library and\nEducation Library and Curriculum Resources Centre. This exhibition\nis an International Pol ar Year project and is part of the\nEntendre et communiquer les voix du Nu navik/ Hearing and\nsharing the voices of Nunavik\, a joint Université du Québec à\nMontréal and ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï initiative funded by the Canadian \nprogram of the International Polar Year (IPY)\, 2008-9. This\nexhibition is also supported by a ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï-SSHRC\nInstitutional grant. It w as made possible in part thanks to the\nAVATAQ Cultural Institute.
