The objective of this project is to relate\nbubble size reduction – summarized by CCC95 (Critical Coalescence\nConcentration) – to frother structure represented by HLB\n(Hydrophilic-Lypophilic Balance). The experi mental frothers -\naliphatic alcohols (1-Alcohol) and Polyglycols (Polypro pylene\nGlycols and Propylene Glycol Ethers) - were selected to give a wid e\nrange in structure-related parameters n (number of carbons in alkyl\ngr oups) and m (number of propylene oxide groups). Bubble size\n(Sauter Mean Diameter D32) was measured in a 700 L mechanical\nflotation cell – a Metso RCSTM 0.8 m3 pilot unit. The D32 data were\nfitted to a 3-parameter model to determine the CCC95 which\nrepresents the concentration giving the min imum D32. The HLB was\ncalculated using the Davies equation. A CCC95-HLB r elationship\ndependent on frother family was demonstrated. To extend to\nc ommercial frothers whose structures are uncertain\, NMR\nspectroscopy was used to identify the frother family and estimate\nthe HLB. It appears that the CCC95 value for a commercial frother\ncan be estimated directly from its molecular structure by using NMR\nspectroscopy.\n \n \n DTSTART:20110401T200000Z DTEND:20110401T200000Z LOCATION:Wong Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0C5\, 3610 rue University SUMMARY:Graduate Seminar - Wei Zhang\, PhD Candidate URL:/channels/event/graduate-seminar-wei-zhang-phd-can didate-173408 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
