Ethical and Policy Issues in Bio specimen\nResearch\nPresented by:\nNancy M.P. King\, J.D.\nFriday\, May 13 th\, 2011\nJack Cram Auditorium\, ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï\, Faculty of Education \n3700 McTavish Street\n\n11:30 – 12:00 Registration and a Light Lunch\n12 :00 Lecture with Discussion to Follow\n\nABSTRACT: The collection of biosp ecimens and data\ninto biorepositories for research purposes is a booming business\nworldwide. Relevant technological capacities continue to expand –\nthe ability to continuously link data with specimens\; to extract\nDNA and other information from very small amounts of blood and\ntissue\; to ma intain both confidentiality and identifiability of\nspecimens\; and to con duct ever more sophisticated research\ninvolving greater and greater numbe rs of specimens to answer\nquestions no one could have previously imagined addressing. When\,\nas a matter of law\, policy\, or ethics\, specimen pr oviders are\nrequired to consent for the use of blood or tissue in researc h\,\nmany significant ethical and practical issues remain. This\npresentat ion considers some of those issues\, including: the\nappropriate scope and limits (if any) of consent to research uses\;\nprivacy\, confidentiality\ , and identifiability\; group interests and\nharms\; and the ethical groun ding of research relationships\ninvolving biospecimens (stewardship\, bioc itizenship\, scientific\nliteracy\, and scientific integrity).\n\nBIOGRAPH Y: Nancy M. P. King\, JD\, is Professor\,\nSocial Sciences and Health Poli cy and Internal Medicine\, School of\nMedicine and Institute for Regenerat ive Medicine\, and Co-Director\nof the Center for Bioethics\, Health\, and Society and the Master of\nArts in Bioethics Program at Wake Forest Unive rsity.
