Today\, more than a billion\npeople still serve as hosts to th ese worms\, almost all of them\nliving in developing nations. These Neglec ted Tropical Diseases\ncause significant morbidity\, contributing to the c ycle of poverty\nwhich constrains development in economically challenged r egions of\nthe world. Medicines to treat these infections have generally b een\nadopted from veterinary use (for livestock and companion animals)\nan d have not been optimized for humans. Several are donated by\nWestern phar maceutical companies for use in human medicine in\nAfrica and elsewhere. W hile undeniably admirable\, an alternative\napproach is to foster innovati on systems that enable scientists\nliving in areas most affected by these diseases to assume\nleadership roles in the search for new and better medi cines to\ntreat them.\nThis lecture will provide an introduction to parasi tic diseases\nof poverty and describe a novel drug discovery process that has\nbeen implemented in South Africa and Botswana\, focused on\nidentifyi ng high-value antiparasitic drug candidates in collections\nof chemicals p urified from African botanical and microbial sources.\nChanging the way in which needed drugs are provided to regions of\npoverty requires the stren gthening of scientific capacity as well\nas the development of new ways of thinking about intellectual\nproperty and the requirement for local leade rship. The integration\nof multiple levels of development is a significant challenge with\ngreat rewards.\nPHOTO: Interview with Tim Geary: Let's lo ok\nfor the next generation cures ... and let's do it in Africa where\nthe se problems are of significant local interest and\nimportance. / Source: M cGill Reporter\, Jan. 26\, 2011.\nPhoto: Owen Egan.\nInitiated in 2003 wit h the express purpose of fostering\ncommunication between scientists in di fferent disciplines as well\nas between scientists and the public\, Cuttin g\nEdge Lectures in Science are made possible through\nthe generous suppor t of Faculty of Medical Sciences (Professor\nMarianna Newkirk\, Associate Dean Research)\, Faculty of Arts\n(Professor Christopher Manfredi\, Dean)\ , Faculty of Agricultural and\nEnvironmental Sciences (Professor Chandra M adramootoo\, Dean)\,\nFaculty of Science (Professor Martin Grant\, Dean) a nd the Centre\nfor Applied Mathematics in Bioscience and Medicine (CAMBAM) .
