 m will explore the creation of digital objects and environments\nas acts o
 f interpretation and mediation. More often than not\ndigital humanists hav
 e focused on the presentation and analysis of\ndigital content. However\, 
 designing both hardware and software are\nacts of interpretation that infl
 uence what the content will be\, how\nit will be experienced\, and the way
 s in which it will be\nunderstood. Code mediates between the architecture\
 , infrastructure\,\nand digital content\; it is usually invisible\, but it
 s writing sees\nthe creation of virtual objects. From the encoding of a te
 xt in\nTEI\, to the creation of a class of objects in PHP or Python\, to a
 \nYoutube video\, the digital world is reducible to text that is\ninterpre
 ted and read: content by users\; code by\ncyberinfrastructure. Unlike the 
 binding of a book\, the digital\nhumanist is faced with the real task of c
 reating the virtual paper\nand glue that presents their content. This proc
 ess of artifice is\nonly just beginning to be appreciated for its hermeneu
 tic\nimplications.\n
