Earth and Planetary Sciences\, ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï\nUniversity)\nThis lectur e addresses the nature and causes of episodic\neruptions which can cause l ocal\, regional\, and global devastation.\nA key parameter is the presence of large volumes of magma\, stored\nat 5-10 km depth in a crustal magma r eservoir\, which are capable of\nbeing erupted. If a reservoir is sufficie ntly drained of its magma\nduring eruption\, the roof of the reservoir wil l fail\, creating a\nlarge depression on the surface called a caldera. Whe ther a caldera\nforms early or late during the course of an eruption will influence\nthe style of the eruption. Another key parameter is the trigger \nwhich initiates the eruption. Potential trigger mechanisms include\neart hquakes and injections of magma from deeper levels in the crust\nor mantle . Understanding the types of precursory activity which\nlead to a large er uption is a current challenge in volcanology\, as\nwe have never experienc ed such an event in historic time.\nNevertheless\, we may draw on clues fr om smaller events to provide\nus with insight. The lectures will conclude with a discussion of\nthe probable consequences of such eruptions upon our society.
