What\nmaterials might someone conducting this line of research consi der?\n'Maritime' in this sense points to research and analysis conducted\n on material culture with a view from sea to land. The Philippines\nis an a rchipelago of over 7000 islands and is geographically\nlocated at the nexu s of two great seas - the Indian and Pacific\nOceans. Multiple cultural gr oups lived on the land and waters of\nthe archipelago for millennia.  This work is focused on the\nHistorical Period  (10th to 19th centuries). The presenter has\ndeveloped two research projects on how to analyse maritime material\nculture available on the cultural groups\, the ideas are\ncompli mentary but separate. One will investigate past sailors'\ncognitive awaren ess of space and initial findings of common\nelements between different cu ltural groups' navigation tools. The\nsecond project involves the typologi cal analysis of beads\narchaeologically recovered from shipwrecks of the P hilippine waters\ndated intermittently across the Historic Period. This pr esentation\nwill also share information on the resources available at the \nUniversity of Oxford\, the meaning of keywords\, and an overview of\nthe speaker’s current research.\nAbout the Speaker\nJennifer Craig is a PhD c andidate at the University of\nOxford.\n DTSTART:20120126T210000Z DTEND:20120126T223000Z LOCATION:Peterson Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E6\, 3460 rue McTavish SUMMARY:Maritime History and Archaeology: What can these subjects reveal?
