For Chantal Roby (Certificate of Proficiency in English for Professional Communication’26), returning to the Թ School of Continuing Studies (SCS) was not only an academic decision but also the completion of a personal learning journey that started 17 years ago. After beginning her studies at SCS in 2009, she stepped away due to personal challenges. “I came back with the will and strength to finish the program I started almost two decades ago,” she says.

Compared to her initial experience in 2009, Chantal developed new strategies to stay organized, for example, using MyCourses to help manage her studies alongside other responsibilities.

What sustained her most was a sense of purpose and community. “I was fulfilling a personal goal,” she explains. Surrounded by supportive classmates and instructors, she stayed motivated even on difficult days. “The sense of belonging was significant in my journey.”

Chantal enrolled in the program to strengthen her language skills and improve her confidence. Over time, it helped her achieve both goals. Her outstanding academic performance was recognized with the Edward C. Webster Prize in English as a Second Language, awarded annually to the top student in the Certificate of Proficiency in English for Professional Communication program.

Today, Chantal is planning to launch an English-language non-fiction book club inspired by her coursework. The SCS program also gave her the confidence to pursue new opportunities, from bilingual roles to engaging with global communities, such as contributing to the Tolkien Society.

Congratulations, Chantal, on this meaningful achievement!
