Dr. Emilie Trinh Named Young Nephrologist of the Year

We are pleased to share that Dr. Emilie Trinh has been named Young Nephrologist of the Year by the Société Québécoise de Néphrologie (SQN). This award recognizes a promising early-career nephrologist for contributions to community involvement, academic work, or education.

Dr. Trinh was recognized for her work in quality improvement, research, and education. This also marks the second consecutive year that a ��Թ� nephrologist has received this award, following Dr. Thomas Mavrakanas in 2025.

Dr. Elvin Kedhi Appointed ��Թ� DOM Director of Fellowships

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Elvin Kedhi to the new position of ��Թ� DOM Director of Fellowships. Dr. Kedhi is Professor of Medicine and Director of Interventional Cardiology at the MUHC, and Director of the ��Թ� Complex High-Risk Indicated Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (CHIP-PCI) Fellowship.

Making Space in Science: Eleanor Hill Venning

With International Women’s Day recently marked on March 8, we take this opportunity to highlight a pioneer from our department’s history: Eleanor Hill Venning, a Montreal-born chemist whose work changed how we understand hormones and their role in health and pregnancy. In the 1930s, Venning developed new ways to measure hormone byproducts in urine, making it possible for scientists and clinicians to study reproductive biology with a precision that had not existed before.

Venous Thrombosis Trial Published in The New England Journal of Medicine

The first clinical trial to compare two commonly used drugs head-to-head for venous thrombosis treatment has found a clear winner: while both drugs work well to prevent recurrent blood clots, apixaban is safer than rivaroxaban, with fewer bleeding complications.

The COBRRA trial, led by researchers at The Ottawa Hospital, aimed to directly compare bleeding with apixaban and rivaroxaban in venous thrombosis patients. The trial enrolled 2,760 participants from 32 sites across Canada, Australia and Ireland.

Dr. Susan Kahn honoured for a lifetime of achievement in thrombosis medicine

Dr. Susan Kahn, Professor of Medicine at ��Թ� and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care at the Jewish General Hospital, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Esteemed Career Award from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. She will receive the award this July at the ISTH Congress in Paris.

Department of Medicine Members Awarded New CIHR Project Grants

The DOM is delighted to share our colleagues’ successes at the Fall 2025 CIHR Project Grant competition. Results just announced by CIHR include new multi-year project grants to nominated principal investigators Drs. Amine Benmassaoud, Jonathon Campbell, Maziar Divangahi, Emily McDonald, Sushmita Pamidi, Marc Rodger, Bryan Ross, Erwin Schurr, and Peter Siegel. Their projects represent a total of $10.5 million in new CIHR funding. They highlight the diverse research strengths of our department, and the promise of our newest investigators. Congratulations to all!

In Memoriam: Dr. Stephen Caplan

Dr. Stephen Caplan passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 5, 2026. Steve will be deeply missed by his extended family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.

Steve served with distinction as Chief of Hematology at the Jewish General Hospital for many years, where his dedication to his work and compassion for others defined his career. A kind and generous soul, he also found joy in running marathons, playing bridge, and making music. Above all else, he cherished time spent with his family.

Dr. Ana-Maria Copaescu Appointed Early Career Representative

Dr. Ana-Maria Copaescu has been appointed as the Department of Medicine’s Early Career Representative. Dr. Copaescu is an Assistant Professor (Clinical) at ��Թ� and a clinician-scientist specializing in drug allergy and immunology. She completed her PhD in drug allergy and has contributed to international guidelines on the management of drug allergy. Her research focuses on advancing personalized approaches in allergy care.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing last week of our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Qutayba Hamid. Dr. Hamid served as Director of the Meakins-Christie Labs from 2008 to 2017. During that period his laboratory served as a globally recognized centre of excellence and training ground in the field of obstructive airways disease, attracting countless students, fellows and clinicians from all over the world.
