Website launched for ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages

ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) has launched an interactive website for the upcoming events around the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages, to be held May 10th and 11th at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï and Kahnawà:ke. .

The symposium's goal is to examine the role of the university in Indigenous language maintenance and revitalization. An Open Forum will take place Thursday, May 10th in the Education building, and a Community Forum will take place Friday, May 11th at Kahnawà:ke.

The symposium is organized with the support of the Kanien’keháka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Centre, The Faculty of Education, The Department of Linguistics and ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's Faculty of Arts, the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Indigenous Studies Program, and ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's Institute for the Study of International Development, and OFNIE. The purpose of this Symposium is to:

  • signal ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s commitment to Indigenous languages in this province and 
  • examine more closely what role the University should play in supporting the health of Indigenous languages, locally and regionally.

Special invitees include Indigenous language teachers, scholars, and university program directors from across Canada.
