Message from the Chair: May 2026

I have been continuing my annual visits to our University Family Medicine Groups, and it has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with so many of you in person, to hear about the outstanding work you are doing locally and learn more about challenges we are facing across our network.

On May 6, I had the pleasure of participating in Palliative Care ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s Bowling Night, a lovely family-oriented way to meet colleagues!

On May 20, I travelled to Drummondville with Fanny Hersson-Edery and Miriam Boillat to participate in the provincial working day on the reform of the family medicine curriculum, to further plan the four different pilot projects to extend family medicine training in Quebec (Projets pilots d’allongement de la formation en médecine familiale au Québec).

We are now just days away from our Academic Day on June 3 at the Centre Mont-Royal. (For questions about registration please contact com.fammed [at] mcgill.ca) I am very much looking forward to what promises to be an engaging, inspiring, and intellectually stimulating day for our entire Family Medicine community. Here is a sneak peek of the agenda. The Graduation Ceremony for family medicine residents will be held in the evening of June 3, also at the Centre Mont Royal. Please email julie.lane [at] mcgill.ca if you would like to register.

Dr. Chris Burton, Professor of Primary Medical Care at the University of Sheffield, UK, will be giving an all-day Faculty Development workshop titled From Science to Sense-Making : Persistent Physical Symptoms in Family Practice for the Department of Family Medicine for a full day on June 4th. Register here.

To round out a very busy week, the Journée du College Québécois des Médecins de Famille will be on June 5th (), as will be the Palliative Care ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Annual Retreat (Register here).

The following week, on June 12th in the morning, two of our department’s research groups will be hosting the FMER-PRAM Crossroad Panel Discussions: Patient groups in family medicine: opportunities for care and implications for medical education. Register here.

To close, I offer congratulations to:

  • Our latest cohort of graduating students on completing their family medicine degrees with us. We’ve launched a series of seven interviews, asking graduate students to share their experiences of completing a degree in the Department of Family Medicine. Read more.
  • Dr. Julie Massé, who will be inaugurated into the Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on June 4.
  • Prof. Tracie Barnett, who has been promoted to Full Professor in the department!

I suspect many of you have, like me, been spending far more time watching hockey recently than usual, so I will close with Go Habs Go!

Very warmly as always,

Marion
