The Department of Family Medicine is pleased to congratulate Dr. Douglass Dalton from CLSC Métro, and Dr. Michelle Lajzerowicz from Campus Outaouais, on receiving the J. Donald Boudreau Physicianship Award. Dr. Dalton received his award during the Osler Fellow Workshop and Celebration held on June 2 at the Թ Faculty Club.

“The J. Donald Boudreau Physicianship Award recognizes an Osler Fellow who, over the course of four years of meeting with a small group of medical students, has consistently demonstrated the qualities of mentorship, pedagogy, and role modeling espoused by the Physicianship Program. Nominations for this award come from the students and are based on their personal reflections on the impact of their Osler Fellow, both on themselves and on their group,” explains Miriam Boillat, MDCM, who is Associate Professor of Family Medicine and, until June was the Chair of the Osler Fellowship Faculty Development Program. “The contribution of Osler Fellows to the professional identity formation of their students cannot be overstated. When Osler groups meet, meaningful and lasting mentorship occurs, students’ experiences are heard and validated, students are supported, and they are given a space to reflect on and discuss their “becoming” as physicians.”

Reflecting on the award, Dr. Dalton emphasized the importance of the relationships he developed with his students throughout the program. “I was fortunate in having a cohesive group of students who worked well together. It was immensely gratifying to watch them grow into their professional identities,” he said. “I had planned my retirement around the graduation of these students. I feel that this is a welcome finishing touch to my own career, as they begin theirs.”

Drs. Dalton and Lajzerowicz were selected in recognition of their outstanding commitment to mentoring medical students and fostering the principles of physicianship. As Osler Fellows, both family physicians have played an important role in guiding students through their medical education journey. Through their mentorship, they have helped learners navigate the challenges of medical training while modelling the qualities of compassion, professionalism, reflection, and patient-centred care that are at the heart of physicianship.

The Physician Apprenticeship Program is a cornerstone of Թ's undergraduate medical curriculum. Through longitudinal mentorship, Osler Fellows support students in their transition from learners to physicians, encouraging professional identity formation and a deeper understanding of the human dimensions of medical practice.

The Department of Family Medicine extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Dalton and Dr. Lajzerowicz on this well-deserved recognition and thanks them for their ongoing contributions to medical education and mentorship of future physicians.
