What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month is a time for reflection and accountability. It represents an opportunity to honour the contributions and resilience of Black physicians, educators, and community leaders who have shaped healthcare—often while navigating significant barriers. It is also a reminder that equity in medicine is not a historical goal we have achieved, but an ongoing responsibility we must actively uphold.

For many Department members, the most significant event this month was the agreement reached between the Fédération des Médecins Omnipracticiens du Québec and the provincial government to put a halt to Law 2. At the time of writing, the result of the FMOQ members’ vote on the agreement is not available, but it appears likely that it will be approved. If that happens, the Department of Family Medicine will start the work of repairing the damage that occurred in the 7 weeks of Law 2 (retirements, departures, etc.) to further our vision of education, research, and patient care.

Alexandra Massicotte, MD, physician and Unit Director at the Department of Family Medicine’s Vaudreuil-Soulanges U-FMG, has been named a finalist for the Emerging Practitioner Award (catégorie Relève) from the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ). This distinction recognizes early-career physicians who demonstrate outstanding leadership, innovation, community engagement, and commitment to advancing medical practice.

This day provides an important opportunity to reflect on how we can continue building environments academic, clinical, and administrative where persons with disabilities are valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Alayne Adams Honoured by the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing

Alayne Adams, PhD, Associate Professor and Global Health Director at the Department of Family Medicine, has received the 2025 Social Prescribing Research Award by the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing (CISP). This national recognition highlights her leadership in advancing the field of social prescribing through The Social Prescription Collaborative, a research initiative jointly led by ��Թ� and Université Laval that is generating new knowledge, tools and approaches to strengthen the implementation of social prescription (SP) in Quebec and beyond.

Connected by Care: Exploring Human and Digital Integration at the 2025 Family Medicine Annual Retreat

The Department of Family Medicine held its 2025 Annual Retreat online on October 23 and 24 under the theme titled Connected by Care: Human and Digital Integration in Family Medicine. This two-part event brought together faculty from across the Department to explore the intersections of teaching, technology, equity, and clinical practice, marking an important moment of reflection and forward planning for the future of primary care in Quebec. The retreat was accredited for professional development by ��Թ�.

The month of October has been a whirlwind of both positive and negative moments. On October 23 and 24 our Annual Department Retreat took place and was a tremendous success! On Day 1, we discussed the realities, opportunities and challenges of Distributed Medical Education. It was great to see so many of our rural teachers come together. On Day 2, we explored the theme of Human and Digital Integration in Family Medicine. Thank you to all those who participated so wholeheartedly -- your commitment, curiosity and passion came through. Together, we were truly Connected by Care!
