He began his academic career as a scholar of twentieth-century Am erican poetry and has since become a central figure in the development\, d issemination\, and rethinking of queer theory. He is the author of Transme mberment of Song: Hart Crane's Anatomies of Rhetoric and Desire (1987)\, H omographesis: Essays in Gay Literary and Cultural Theory (1994)\, No Futur e: Queer Theory and the Death Drive (2004)\, and Sex\, or the Unbearable ( 2014\, co-authored with Lauren Berlant).
