Call for Papers: The contemporary world is marked by a state of ongoing tension, no longer driven by isolated crises, but by the convergence and interplay of multiple, simultaneous crises: pandemics, war, migration, climate catastrophes, economic instability, disinformation, and the erosion of social trust. This polycrisis has become a new paradigm of experiencing reality — complex, unpredictable, and difficult to articulate in simple terms. In this context, language gains critical importanc

Contemporary democracies face political and social crises fueled by discriminatory and xenophobic ideologies that challenge the legitimacy of diversity and the recognition of the other (Piccardo, 2017; Dalgalian, 2017; Spaëth, 2010; Rancière, 2005). In this context of growing nationalism (Billig, 1995), this conference proposes to examine, from a critical perspective and in light of recent global events, the role of multilingualism and language education in the construction and preservation of d

In such literature as I am able to search (as well as what I can find via Internet searches) such borrowings seem to be very rarely reported. I do not assume that this necessarily is representative because it seems to me that one cannot easily get info on MOST languages this way (which is a very general problem). The one example that seems solid of a total replacement of the native word by a borrowed one that I have is Island Carib. Japanese, Korean, and Balinese are reliably documented as hav

Focus: The topic of emotions is a complex one: it belongs to that category of phenomena that everyone can intuitively grasp, yet no one can fully or satisfactorily define. Dictionaries describe emotion as a “reactive, reflexive, involuntary behavior experienced simultaneously at the bodily level, to a greater or lesser degree of intensity, and affectively as pleasure or pain” (TLFi). The phenomenon thus combines at least two dimensions – a physical and a cognitive one – and is expressed in terms
