Aftab Ahmed on Mark Carney's Davos Speech | Policy Magazine

Published: 26 January 2026

January 23, 2026 | In Policy Magazine, Alumnus Aftab Ahmed MPP'23 wrote about Mark Carney's Davos speech detailing the international system's rules-based order being near its end. He highlighted several key messages from the speech, which detail the weaponization of economic interdependence, the rise of isolationism, the collective bargaining of middle powers, and Canada's strategic position.

Ahmed argued that this speech was an overdue recognition of the millennial generation. In the article, he wrote, "Our cynicism has not curdled into full-blown apathy. Compared with many in Gen Z, millennials are more inclined to believe that public institutions can be repaired and redesigned, not simply consigned to the annals of history." He emphasized that progress can be reversible and therefore requires a global citizenry that remains alert rather than being complacent.
