��Թ� engineers have developed new ultra-thin materials that can be programmed to move, fold and reshape themselves, much like animated origami. They open the door to softer, safer and more adaptable robots that could be used in medical tools that gently move inside the body, wearable devices that change shape on the skin or smart packaging that reacts to its environment.

Prof. Marta Cerruti of the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering received the My Green Lab Certification from ��Թ� Office of Sustainability (MOOS), which recognizes the green lab practices in her lab (Biointerfaces Cerruti Lab) over the last few months.

Her group achieved a certification score of 74% and a Platinum Level Certificate, a formidable achievement.

Our Mining grad Will Dixon (B.Eng. ’20) has received a Schwarzman Scholarship for graduate study in China. Dixon is one of just 151 students to receive the prestigious scholarship for 2023-2024.

The Schwarzman Scholarship program offers recipients a one-year, fully funded Master’s degree program in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College on the campus of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Sinan Abi Farraj, a senior Materials Engineering Undergraduate student, has been named among the 50 finalists for the inaugural McCall MacBain Scholarship, Canada’s first comprehensive leadership-based scholarship for master’s and professional studies. From over 735 applicants, 50 finalists were selected, chosen based on their character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength and intellectual curiosity.

On February 28th, 2017, Professor Emeritus John J. Jonas was the recipient of the prestigious Acta Materialia Gold Medal. Along with a solid, 24 karat, gold medal, Prof. Jonas received a $10,000 USD cash prize. This award recognizes his seminal contributions to understanding phase transformations and dynamic re-crystallization in steel when it is red hot and flying through a rolling mill at 100 km/hr.

Alexandra Plante ’11 studied Materials Engineering at ��Թ�. She participated in the Materials Engineering co-op program during university and accumulated a wide range of work experiences prior to graduation at companies including BlackBerry and Pratt & Whitney. Immediately after graduating, she took a role as a post-graduate placement intern in materials for Adidas in Germany for eight months, and then as project manager at an engineering consulting firm for a year where she had previously completed an internship after her U0 year.
