Seven Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences members were honoured at the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC)’s International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM) last month in Ottawa. 

Lia Sanzone, Professor in the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN), received the AFMC’s Mentorship Award, which recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates an exemplary and sustained commitment to providing outstanding mentorship, guidance, and inspiration to colleagues within Canadian faculties of medicine. Prof. Sanzone, a renowned educator, mentor and campion of nursing pedagogy and professionalism, is the ISoN’s inaugural Associate Director of Undergraduate and Entry to Practice Education. Congratulations, Prof. Sanzone! 

Molly Shen, a PhD candidate in Biological and Biomedical Engineering, was bestowed the Edwin Kroeger Global Emerging Scientist Award, which recognizes outstanding early-career scientists whose work demonstrates exceptional promise and leadership in the field of health research. Shen, a member of Professor of Biomedical Sciences David Juncker’s lab and the Department’s first Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar, focuses her research on decoding cellular communication in breast cancer metastasis and developing next-generation tools for cancer modelling and diagnostics.

Also at ICAM, five FMHS graduate students received accolades for their health research posters as part of the ICAM Health Research Forum (previously Canadian Student Health Research Forum): 

, MDCM candidate (Class of 2028), Gold Award for his poster presentation. He was also one of four presenters who received a Gairdner ICAM Scholar Award, and he will be invited to Toronto in October to attend Gairdner Science Week. 

 PhD candidate in Human Genetics specializing in epigenetics, immunology & metabolism, received a Gold Award.  

, MDCM-PhD student specializing in Neurology, specializing in epilepsy, received a Silver Award.  

, OT, a PhD candidate in Rehabilitation Science at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy specializing in cognition in older adults and knowledge translation, received a Silver Award for her presentation.   

, PhD, who just graduated with his doctorate in Human Genetics, specializing in preclinical cancer genomics & translational research, received a Silver Award.
