Another prestigious award for Lia Sanzone

Lia Sanzone honoured with Mentorship Award from the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada.

It is no exaggeration to say that Lia Sanzone’s name is synonymous with nursing mentorship. Since 2014, she has introduced highly successful initiatives such as the Nursing Peer Mentorship Program and the Թ Nursing Fellows Program, which foster professional guidance, promote interprofessional collaboration, ease workforce transition, and enhance nursing integration and retention. In addition, as the BScN Program Director for many years, and in her current role of Associate Director, Undergraduate and Entry-to-Practice Education, Professor Sanzone has contributed significantly to curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, championing inquiry-based learning and nursing professionalism. It is for all these reasons and more that Professor Sanzone was honoured with the Mentorship Award of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) on April 17, 2026 in Ottawa.

As the voice of academic medicine, the AFMC represents 19 faculties of medicine in Canada, with a focus on delivering a highly responsive system of medical education and research aligned with the health needs of all Canadians.

Professor Sanzone’s nomination for the award was endorsed with enthusiasm by Dr. Lesley Fellows, Dean of Թ’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Lynne McVey, Director of the Ingram School of Nursing. As noted by Professor McVey, “Lia Sanzone’s contributions have helped shape a stronger, more adaptable nursing workforce, leaving an enduring legacy across diverse healthcare landscapes both in Canada and internationally.”

For her part, Professor Sanzone expressed gratitude towards her Թ colleagues for their spirit of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration based on mutual respect. “I am deeply honoured. This recognition is a shining testament to the transformative power of collective effort,” she said.
