Plurilingual Lab Speaker Series: Voices from Latin-America: Decolonial, Multilingual and Multimodal Resisting Practices

You're invited to our next virtual Plurilingual Lab Speaker Series event:

Voices from Latin-America: Decolonial, Multilingual and Multimodal Resisting Practices

The imposition of European epistemology, ontology, and languages in Latin-America for 500 years has deeply impacted the existing multilingual/multimodal practices throughout the continent. Nevertheless, this imposition has found resistance and creativity from both Indigenous and Afro-descendant groups who have struggled to (re)position themselves in unjust societies. The purpose of this presentation is two-fold: to present these resisting decolonial practices carried out by minoritized groups in a multilingual and multimodal fashion; and b) to analyze the aforementioned practices vis-à-vis issues of land recognition, citizenship, gender, blackness, and ethnicity, among other sociocultural factors. Through audios and videos performed in different platforms such as YouTube, this presentation will showcase artistic creations by different Indigenous and Afro-Latin American artists in Latin America and the Caribbean. These creations will include literary creations, musical compositions, and theatrical performances. This presentation will attempt to argue that these artistic performances are a testament to these minoritized groups’ linguistic creativity and decolonizing, resisting, and re-existing practices.

Language of presentation: English, with examples in other languages
