Unmasking the mechanisms of emerging variants

Scientists are seeking answers to why SARS-CoV-2 variants are so transmissible and why they cause greater disease severity than the original strain. ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s Qian (Vivian) Liu, together with researchers from the University of British Columbia and the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, have launched a study to understand this question, investigating how SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins are organized and moved on the cell or virus surface by using single-molecule imaging technology.

Mapping the genome of lake trout to ensure its survival

Ten ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï researchers honoured by the Royal Society of Canada

Today, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) announced 89 new Fellows and 51 new Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Among the 2021 RSC cohort are ten ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï researchers, including seven RSC Fellows and three Members, who will be inducted at the RSC Celebration of Excellence and Engagement, hosted by ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï on Friday, November 19, 2021. The new ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï cohort will join 228 ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï researchers who are currently RSC Fellows and Members of the College.

The Beatty Lecture - now in print

The Beatty Lecture, established in 1952 in honour of former Canadian Pacific Railway president and ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï chancellor Sir Edward Beatty, is ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s most anticipated annual event. Some of the series’ greatest lectures, delivered by Nobel Prize laureates, world leaders, and cultural icons, had been forgotten, carefully stowed away in the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Archives.

Researcher to address gender based violence with Government of Canada grant

On August 6, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development announced agreements that will see almost $200 million over two years flow to shelters, sexual assault centres and organizations supporting women and children experiencing violence. ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Professor Jin Guo awarded research grant from Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Jin Guo, Assistant Professor of Software Engineering at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's School of Computer Science, was awarded $382,020 in research funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's Better Software for Science program to study and improve the usability of large-userbase scientific open source software through early engagement of software users.
