How to Research the Academic Job Market

June 3, 12pm -12:45pm (online)

If you’re exploring career options, one factor to consider is the availability of academic jobs in your discipline and your competitiveness for those positions.

There is often limited public information available to doctoral students about the academic job market for their specific discipline and program. This lesson will help you research the academic job market in your field and figure out what the market looks like for YOU as a candidate.

While this research can be a challenging exercise for many PhDs, it’s an important step in making an informed career decision about staying in academia or exploring non-academic career opportunities.

This webinar is designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • How do I determine what faculty opportunities are available in my discipline or field of study?
  • How do I determine my competitiveness in the field?
  • If I decide to pursue an academic position, how do I best prepare?

Should I Take My PhD and Start a Business?

June 17, 12pm -12:45pm (online)

Many PhDs exploring their career options wonder whether entrepreneurship could be the right path. You've spent years developing deep expertise, so it's natural to ask whether that knowledge could be the foundation of a business.

But starting a business requires the same focused strategy as a job search. Beyond your area of expertise, you'll need to understand the legal, financial, and operational realities of running a business: how to structure it, how to fund it, how to find clients, and how to sustain it.

Join the Beyond Prof team for this webinar where we'll provide a clear and honest overview of what it takes to start a business as a PhD — so you can make an informed decision about whether entrepreneurship is an option for you.

This webinar is designed for doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • What does it realistically take to start and run a business?
  • What legal, financial, and operational factors do I need to consider?
  • How do I evaluate whether entrepreneurship is the right path for me — or whether I should focus on other opportunities?

How to Get the Job You Want, Not the Job You Have

June 3, 2pm - 2:30pm (online)

Are you completing your master’s degree to change careers or advance in your current one?

Then you’ll need to think carefully about how you present your degree and previous work experience to future employers. In today’s competitive job market, mid- and senior-level professionals are competing for a smaller number of open positions. Other candidates will have similar qualifications and extensive experience — just like you. Your master’s degree is valuable, but it will not speak for itself. You will need to be strategic and have a clear plan for how to use it effectively as you move forward in your career.

Join Beyond Graduate School for this webinar on how to get the job you want after completing your master's degree. Whether you are looking to move to a new company or a new career field, you will learn what helps experienced candidates stand out to employers.

This webinar is designed for master's students with 5 or more years of professional experience who are wondering:

  • How do I strategically position my master’s degree to help me change careers or jobs?
  • How do I leverage my previous work experience when changing careers or jobs?
  • How do I leverage my network when changing careers or jobs?Ìý

Avoiding Job Search Scams as a Master’s Student

June 17, 2pm - 2:30pm (online)

Scammers are increasingly targeting early-career professionals — and fake job postings, fraudulent recruiters, and false opportunities are becoming more difficult to identify. These scams appear on platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and other popular job boards.

As a master's student, you may feel pressure to find a job or internship quickly. Scammers take advantage of this. Knowing how to recognize a job search scam can protect your personal information, your money, and your time.

Join Beyond Graduate School for this webinar where you'll learn how to identify warning signs in job postings and recruiter messages, and what steps to take if something does not seem right.

This webinar is designed for master's students from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • How do I know if a job posting or recruiter message is real?
  • What are the most common job search scams targeting graduate students?
  • What should I do if I think I have been contacted by a scammer?

How to Build a Professional Network in a New Career Field

July 8, 2pm - 2:30pm (online)

Changing careers is challenging. One of the biggest difficulties career changers face is that they do not have an existing network in their new field. The people you worked with before may not be able to help you move into a new industry — and it can be hard to know where to start building new connections.

As a career changer completing your master’s degree to move into a new career field, building a professional network is one of the most important steps you can take. A strong network in your new field can help you learn about job opportunities, get advice from people already working in that field, and increase your chances of being considered for a position in a new industry.

Join Beyond Graduate School for this webinar designed specifically for career changers who are completing a master's degree to enter a new profession.

This webinar is designed for master's students from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • Is networking really that important for me, even with my master’s and previous professional experience?
  • How do I start building a network in a career field where I have no existing connections?
  • What do I say to people when I am new to a field and do not have relevant experience yet?

How to Build and Use Your Network to Advance in Your Career

July 22, 2pm - 2:30pm (online)

You have years of professional experience and an existing network. But is your network actually helping you move forward in your career? Many experienced professionals find that the connections they have built over time are not the right ones for where they want to go next, and growing a network at a senior level requires a different approach than it did earlier in their career.

As a career advancer completing a master's degree, you are looking for something specific: a promotion, a more senior role, or a better opportunity at a different organization. The right network can help you get there faster — but it needs to be built and maintained with intention.

Join Beyond Graduate School for this webinar designed specifically for professionals with 5 or more years of work experience who are completing a master's degree to advance in their current field.

This webinar is designed for master's students from all academic disciplines who are wondering:

  • How do I identify the right people to connect with when I am looking to advance in my field?
  • How do I have conversations with senior professionals about my career goals without seeming inappropriate or too transactional?
  • How do I maintain and grow my network while working full time and completing a degree?
