BSW for Graduates with a Social Services DEC

The School of Social Work offers a reduced-credit BSW for graduates of a Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC program completed within the last fiveyears. This applies to all admission categories (CEGEP, transfers from another university, Թ graduates, and inter/intra-faculty transfers within Թ). Applicants from the mature student category are not eligible for a reduced-credit BSW. Please note that students with a completed Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC within the last 5 years should apply to the BSW program in the proper admission category; there is no specific admission category for this reduced-credit BSW.

A maximum of 15 students will be admitted per year in this category.

Students admitted with a completed Social Service Worker/Techniques de Travail Social DEC typically receive 27 credits applied toward the BSW. The School of Social Work cannot guarantee an accelerated timeframe for completing the BSW, even with a reduced credit load.

For students accepted into the BSW with a completed CEGEP Social Service Worker DEC within the last 5 years and no other university-level studies, credit will be granted for the specific BSW courses based on overlapping content from specific CEGEP courses with a grade of 70% or better. As needed, students will be asked to provide their CEGEP course outlines to determine overlap. Students are thus eligible for credit for the following BSW courses:

  • SWRK 220 History & Philosophy of Social Work (3 credits)
  • SWRK 221 Public Social Services in Canada (3 credits)
  • SWRK 222 Introduction to Practicum (3 credits)
  • SWRK 224 Human Development Across the Lifespan (3 credits)
  • SWRK 321 Intro to Practice with Groups (3 credits)
  • SWRK 322 Field Practice 1 (3 credits)
  • SWRK 323 Field Practice 2 (3 credits)
  • SWRK 344 Integrative Seminar 1 (3 credits)
  • SWRK 423 Research Methods (3 credits, to be determined)

Note:

  • An exemption with or without credit for SWRK 224, “Human Development Across the Lifespan,” based on overlapping content from a course taken at CEGEP, meets the prerequisite for admission into the MSW program, provided the grade is 70% or better.
  • Please retain a copy of your CEGEP transcript to confirm your grade and the course syllabus to upload with your MSW application.
  • An exemption with or without credit from SWRK 224, “Human Development Across the Lifespan,” based on overlapping content from a course taken at CEGEP, does not meet the prerequisite for the MSc.A. Couple and Family Therapy program.
