Thomas Engelhardt appointed Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, FMHS
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas Engelhardt, MD, PhD, as Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï.
Dr. Engelhardt will take over as Chair from Thomas Schricker, MD, PhD, who has held the position for two consecutive terms since 2016. We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Schricker for his dedication to the Department. His achievements as Chair are many and include the transition of the Anesthesia residency program into the new Competency by Design curriculum in 2017; building on ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s leadership—in collaboration with the Department of Surgery—as the first institution in North America to implement Enhanced Recovery after Surgery; and establishing the Transition into Clinical Practice (TCP) curriculum at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s Campus Outaouais.
Dr. Engelhardt, who assumes his new responsibilities on January 1, 2026, previously served as Acting Chair of the Department for several months at the beginning of 2025. He is Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï, Anesthetist-in-Chief, Department of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Health Centre, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Montreal Foundation Chair in Pediatric Anesthesia. He was also Professor of Anaesthesia at the University of Aberdeen, UK.
Dr. Engelhardt is a graduate of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany and was supported by the German National Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (UK) and obtained his PhD in 2003 at the University of Aberdeen. Following his completion certificate of specialist training in the UK, he undertook clinical/research fellowships in pediatric intensive care and pediatric anaesthesia at the Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow, UK as well as the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in 2006.
Returning to Scotland, Dr. Engelhardt worked as Consultant Anaesthetist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, serving as Head of Service Paediatric Anaesthesia between 2012 to 2015. In 2017, he was promoted to Honorary Professor in Anaesthesia at the University of Aberdeen. In 2019, he was recruited to Montreal to join the Montreal Children’s Hospital and FMHS at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï. He served as Anesthetist in Chief, Pediatric Anesthesia at Shriners Hospital–Canada between 2019 and 2021.
Recognized internationally as a leader in pediatric anesthesia, Dr. Engelhardt has authored well over 150 peer-reviewed publications and has presented more than 100 invited lectures and workshops across the globe. He is the editor of two pediatric anesthesia textbooks and editorial board member for three major anesthesia journals. His scientific interests are focussed on pediatric anaesthesia safety, pharmacology and airway management.
Dr. Engelhardt has held numerous scientific board and committee appointments including the Children of the World Anesthesia Foundation Scientific Committee, Association of Paediatric Anaesthesia of Great Britain and Ireland (APAGBI) and European Society of Anesthesiology. He also served on the steering committees for major pediatric anesthesia projects including NEonate-Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe (NECTARINE) and Critical Events in Anesthetised Kids undergoing Tracheal Intubation (CRICKET). He is also a Founding Member of the safetots.org initiative that addresses the safe conduct of pediatric anesthesia and promotes the rights of the child for high quality care in the right environment.
In his new role as Chair, Dr. Engelhardt will lead the Department in its education and research missions. He will provide mentoring to faculty members at various stages of their careers and make recommendations to the VP-Dean on recruitment, academic appointments, promotion and tenure. He will lead the strategic planning for the Department and oversee budget allocation, and be responsible for annual reviews of faculty members. Dr. Engelhardt will participate in the Faculty Leadership Commons, the School of Medicine Clinical Leadership Council, and advise on academic matters pertaining to the Department.
Dr. Engelhardt will also develop strong working relationships with other Chairs within the School of Medicine, with clinical leadership in anesthesia at the affiliated teaching hospitals, and with the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences. In addition, he will continue to build on the strong relationships with department members based at Campus Outaouais and other regional centres across the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï RUISSS.

Le DrÌýEngelhardt prend la relève de Thomas Schricker, M.D., Ph.ÌýD., qui a occupé le poste pendant deux mandats consécutifs à partir deÌý2016. Nous tenons à remercier le DrÌýSchricker pour son dévouement envers le Département. Ses mandats à la direction comptent de nombreuses réalisations, par exemple la transition du programme de résidence en anesthésie vers le nouveau modèle de Compétence par conception, enÌý2017; la mise en Å“uvre du système ERAS de récupération optimisée, en collaboration avec le Département de chirurgie, faisant de l’Université ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï le premier établissement d’Amérique du Nord à adopter ce système et consolidant ainsi le leadership mcgillois; ainsi que la mise au point du contenu pédagogique du volet Transition vers la pratique clinique pour le Campus Outaouais.
Le DrÌýEngelhardt entrera en fonction le 1erÌýjanvierÌý2026; notons qu’il a occupé le poste de directeur intérimaire du Département pendant plusieurs mois au début de l’annéeÌý2025. Le DrÌýEngelhardt est professeur au Département d’anesthésie de l’Université ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï, anesthésiste en chef du Département d’anesthésie pédiatrique de l’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants au Centre universitaire de santé ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï et titulaire de la Chaire d’anesthésie pédiatrique de la Fondation de l’Hôpital Queen Elizabeth. Il a également été professeur d’anesthésie à l’Université d’Aberdeen, au Royaume-Uni.
Le DrÌýEngelhardt a obtenu son diplôme de médecine à l’Université Friedrich Schiller de Iéna, en Allemagne, à titre de boursier de laÌýStudienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, avant de devenir Fellow du Royal College of Anaesthetists au Royaume-Uni et d’obtenir un Ph.ÌýD. de l’Université d’Aberdeen enÌý2003. L’Université d’Aberdeen a promu le DrÌýEngelhardt au poste de professeur honoraire d’anesthésie enÌý2017. EnÌý2019, il est venu à Montréal pour assumer ses nouvelles responsabilités à l’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants et à la FMSS, où il a occupé le poste d’anesthésiste en chef du service d’anesthésie pédiatrique de l’Hôpital Shriners pour enfants du Canada entreÌý2019 etÌý2021.
Jouissant d’une réputation internationale comme chef de file en anesthésie pédiatrique, le DrÌýEngelhardt est l’auteur de plus de 150Ìýpublications évaluées par des pairs et a présenté plus de 100Ìýconférences et ateliers partout dans le monde. Il a publié deux manuels d’anesthésie pédiatrique et participe au comité de rédaction de trois grandes revues d’anesthésie. Ses intérêts scientifiques sont axés sur la sécurité, la pharmacologie et l’assistance respiratoire en anesthésie pédiatrique.
Le DrÌýEngelhardt a siégé à bon nombre de conseils scientifiques et autres comités, notamment au comité scientifique de la Fondation Anesthésie enfants du monde, à l’Association of Paediatric Anaesthesia of Great Britain and Ireland et la European Society of Anesthesiology. Il a aussi fait partie des comités directeurs de grands projets sur l’anesthésie pédiatrique, par exemple les projets NECTARINE (Neonate-Children Audit of Anaesthesia Practice in Europe) et CRICKET (Critical Events in Anesthetised Kids Undergoing Tracheal Intubation). De plus, le DrÌýEngelhardt est membre fondateur de l’initiative Safetots.org, qui se penche sur la conduite sécuritaire de l’anesthésie pédiatrique et fait la promotion des droits de l’enfant à des soins de haute qualité dans le bon environnement.
À titre de directeur, le DrÌýEngelhardt dirigera le Département dans la poursuite de ses missions de recherche et d’enseignement. Il agira comme mentor auprès de membres du corps professoral à divers stades de leur carrière et formulera des recommandations à l’intention de la vice-rectrice et doyenne au sujet du recrutement, des nominations professorales, de la promotion et de la permanence au sein du Département. Le DrÌýEngelhardt dirigera la planification stratégique du Département, supervisera l’allocation du budget départemental et assurera les évaluations annuelles des membres du corps professoral attachés au Département. Le DrÌýEngelhardt participera également aux réunions du Forum de direction facultaire et du Conseil de direction clinique de l’École de médecine, en plus de fournir des conseils sur les dossiers universitaires au sein du Département.
Le DrÌýEngelhardt maintiendra de solides liens collaboratifs avec les directions des autres départements de l’École de médecine, avec les responsables cliniques en anesthésie des divers hôpitaux d’enseignement affiliés et avec la doyenne de la Faculté de médecine dentaire et des sciences de la santé orale. Il continuera par ailleurs à entretenir de bonnes relations avec les membres du Département qui exercent au Campus Outaouais et dans d’autres centres régionaux membres du Réseau universitaire intégré de santé et de services sociaux de ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï.
