Requirement for Work Permit

Knowledge of French聽is not required聽to聽obtain聽an initial聽work permit聽to work in Quebec, nor is it,聽at this time,聽required聽to renew聽a聽work permit.

Starting聽in December聽2028,聽a beginner level of聽oral聽French聽will be聽required聽after 3 years in Quebec聽to obtain a聽work permit based on a聽Labour聽Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and聽Certificat聽d鈥檃cception聽du Qu茅bec (CAQ).听

• The requirement will only apply after聽3 years in Quebec as a temporary foreign worker聽on a work permit. Time spent in Quebec as a student or a visitor will not count towards the 3 years of residence.听

• The minimum language level will聽be聽产别驳颈苍苍别谤听(level 4)聽oral聽expression and comprehension.听听

• There is聽no written聽component.听

• Though聽for now聽only targeting LMIA-based work permits,聽French language requirements聽may be extended to other types of work permits.听听

Requirement for Permanent Residence

Almost all聽programs for permanent聽selection聽by Quebec require聽knowledge of French (oral and written聽proficiencies). Spouses聽can be required聽to have a beginner level of spoken French.听

罢丑别听聽of the Skilled Workers Selection Program, open to research chair holders聽and university professors,聽does not require knowledge of French, though it may聽be an聽.听听

There are聽also聽no language requirements to聽聽or another eligible family member.听听

Resources on Campus

The Mon Fran莽ais Program provides French language courses for international tenure-stream and ranked CAS colleagues. Spouses of eligible faculty members are also welcome and encouraged to participate. The goal of the program is to help new faculty become conversant in French in order to facilitate engagement with the broader community in Montr茅al and in Qu茅bec, and to prepare them for the Test d'茅valuation du fran莽ais adapt茅 pour le Qu茅bec (TEFAQ). 黑料网爆吃瓜 will reimburse the TEFAQ fees for eligible faculty members and their spouses.
