Cybersecurity Practitioners with Purpose
Entrepreneurs and cybersecurity experts are seeing the bigger picture when it comes to turning expertise into leadership and experience. ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï alumni like Tiffany Tremont, founder of Silotech Group, and Loyce Pailen, the senior director for ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï's Center for Security Studies and consultant of Jastin Enterprises, LLC, are strengthening their communities by educating others about the importance of cybersecurity. Innovation Meets Opportunity at the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï NEXUS Pitch Competition
ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï recently hosted its first ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Nexus Pitch Competition, where students and alumni entrepreneurs presented business ideas for funding and growth. Sponsored by the University System of Maryland’s Maryland Launch Fund, the event was organized by ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s Digital Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Hub (DEEHub), led by the School of Business. ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Entrepreneurs Enable Change and Help Others Do the Same
Two ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï alumnae—Ginger Miller and Qyana M. Stewart—saw gaps in support for the communities that they were most invested in. Instead of waiting for change to happen, they initiated it, using their entrepreneurial skills to create organizations aimed at filling the gaps. While their journeys are different, their purpose is the same: leveraging their own lived experience, education, and determination to empower others.
Miller is a former boatswain’s mate in the U.S. Navy, who created Women Veterans Interactive (WVI), which focuses on assisting women veterans in transition to post-military life. Stewart earned a master's in information technology from ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï and a PhD in higher education leadership and policy studies from Howard University and has gone on to create GlobalForce for Girls (GFG) which focuses on facilitating the advancement of young women of color in technology. ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Grads Are Making an Impact on Maryland’s Economy and Beyond
Though some may consider entrepreneurship to be an alternative to higher education, a growing number of ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï graduates are finding that education and entrepreneurship work in tandem. ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï entrepreneurs are contributing to Maryland’s economy across a variety of sectors, including the IT, real estate, accounting, and nonprofit fields. Our graduates are helping with job creation, fostering community, and driving change outside of the state as well. Read about their success stories that started with their education.
