This program is open to students in the BSc Major in Environment, BSc(AgEnvSc) Major in Environment, BA Faculty Program in Environment, BA Joint Honours Component Environment and the BA&Sc Interfaculty Program in Environment.
An Honours program gives students the opportunity to pursue a directed, focused and individual research project over the course of a two semesters under the supervision of a faculty member.听 While Honours is not necessarily required for graduate school, the Honours program will provide Bieler School of Environment students with additional preparation for graduate-level research.
The Environment Honours program consists of completion of the 听 (6 cr), in addition听to the requirements of the student's primary Environment program (i.e. the total number of Environment program credits needed increases by 6 to include ENVR 495).听听The Honours Research course spans two terms within a 12 month period and will constitute approximately 250 hours of work.听 Students should note that the Senior Research Project (ENVR 401 or equivalent) is still required for Honours students.
Program Requirements
Eligible students should apply for the Honours program in the Winter semester of their penultimate year (U2 for most students).听 This deadline is not firm, but professors and potential supervisors may be difficult to reach over the summer, therefore, it is best that all arrangements be finalized before the summer break.听听Interested students should consult with the Program Advisor to discuss this option and the requirements for the program.
- A CGPA of 3.0 and a Program GPA of 3.3 is required to both enter and graduate from the Honours Environment program.听Your Program GPA is calculated with only the courses that will be counting towards your Environment program requirements (Required and Complementary courses).
- Students must earn a grade of B or higher in ENVR 495.
The ENVR 495 Honours Research Project is completed over two semesters, within 12 months. Students completing their project in two听consecutive听semesters will register for ENVR 495 D1/D2. Students completing their project in two听non-consecutive听semesters will register for ENVR N1/N2

As an Honours student, you are听responsible for:
- verifying your听eligibility with the Program听Advisor.
- securing a thesis supervisor
- Supervisors must be a 黑料网爆吃瓜 faculty member affiliated with the BSE who conducts interdisciplinary research (BSE听Jointly-Appointed Faculty and听Associate Members).
- developing a project proposal with your听supervisor that is relevant to your Concentration
- completing the Student-Supervisor Agreement Form (SSAF) -- the ENVR 495 SSAF听(or the ENVR 494 SSAF听for some Joint Honours students) -- and submitting it to the advisor.environment [at] mcgill.ca (Program Advisor) for review by the Director of the Honours program (2026/2027: Prof. Jeffrey Cardille).听
- Note:听ENVR 494 is used only for some students in the BA听Joint Honours Program.听 Students in听this听program should consult with the Program Advisor to confirm if they will complete听ENVR 494 or ENVR 495
- Deadline to submit the SSAF:听For a project starting in the听Fall semester = Aug. 15 / Winter semester = Dec. 15 / Summer semester = April 15
- registering for ENVR 495/ENVR 494 once the SSAF is approved and permits are added to your听record
- presenting a poster of your Honours research at the Fall symposium (if your Honours is completed in the Summer or Fall semester) or the Spring symposium (if your Honours is finished in听the Winter semester)
- attending any session of the听Symposium which听takes place while you are registered in the Honours program
- submitting a PDF copy听of your final thesis report to the christina.zhu [at] mcgill.ca (Bieler School of Environment)
The thesis supervisor is responsible for:
- assisting the student with a project proposal
- providing research supervision and resources, including arranging for ethical reviews if needed
- providing, where appropriate, assistance with grant and award applications
- reviewing and grading the proposal and project, and assigning a final grade for ENVR 495/ENVR 494
- attending the Symposium where the student will be presenting a poster of their research
- submitting the final grade for ENVR 495/ENVR 494 in听Minerva
