Maya Low

Maya Low is a PhD candidate in Cultural Psychiatry at ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï, where her research examines structural violence and maternal mental health in Lomé, Togo. She holds an MSc in Global Health from McMaster University and a BASc with a minor in International Development Studies from the University of Guelph.

Maya's research and writing focus is grounded in health policy and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. At the University of Cape Town, she addressed sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and education for adolescent mothers. Her policy expertise includes analyzing WHO framework implementation and consulting on international health interventions. Most recently, she has begun examining how large language models perform as cross-cultural sources of mental health guidance, and the biases that emerge when such tools are applied across cultural contexts.

At ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï, Maya served as the faculty advisor to the ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï Journal of African Studies and teaches and supports undergraduate courses in international development, global health, and human rights. Her teaching brings together critical, decolonial, and cross-cultural perspectives on health, development, and social change.
