Identifying Pathological Neurons Driving the Epileptogenic Zone from the Cellular to Macroscopic Scale

Abstract: Fast ripples generated by pathologically interconnected neuron (PIN) clusters are believed to be important for epileptogenesis and seizure genesis but many ambiguities and questions remain. Machine learning strategies that utilize pathological high-frequency oscillation (pHFOs) features, along with analyses of action potentials from neurons in the epileptogenic zone during pHFOs, show that certain fast ripple generating cortex may be more important than others for identifying the epileptogenic zone.Ìý Our data show that these certain hyper-excitable PIN clusters may be distinguished by reduced or depolarizing synaptic inhibition.Ìý

Shennan Weiss MD/PhD received his bachelor's degree at Pomona College in molecular biology and neuroscience and completed the NIH medical scientist training program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Weiss then completed his internship in internal medicine and his neurology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia University. He then completed a two year combined research and clinical epilepsy fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Weiss has received support from NIH/NINDS including a National Research Service award, an R25 award, and a K23 award. He has also received funding from the American Epilepsy Society and the Epilepsy Foundation. Dr. Weiss received the Founders Award from the American Academy of Neurology in 2013.
