The “forgotten children” of sexual abuse in family settings

When a child has been sexually abused by a family member, post-disclosure interventions prioritize the child who was victimized. Siblings who were not directly abused can also be deeply affected by the abuse. New research from Թ finds siblings are nevertheless routinely unable to access available supports.

New Research from Prof. Rose Bagot's Lab uncovers how GABAergic neurons encode experienced rewards

New work from Dr. Rosemary Bagot's lab: inhibitory "GABAergic" neurons — long treated as supporting players in the brain — turn out to help track the recent history of rewards in two key decision-making regions (shown in mice). The work reshapes which neurons we think are keeping score of our past outcomes.

Expert: Bank of Canada’s interest rate announcement

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada will announce whether it is changing the overnight interest rate, currently 2.25 per cent. The rate has an impact both on inflation and on economic growth.

Construction starts: Macdonald Harrington Building – Replacement of elevator 22

Թ’s Facilities Management and Ancillary Services (FMAS) has mandated Ascenseur Adams Elevator Inc. to carry out Project 25-016 – Macdonald-Harrington Hall, Elevator 22 Replacement.

The project consists of replacing Elevator 22 and its associated mechanical equipment to improve reliability, accessibility, and safety.

Unusual calcite formation discovered at the site of Թ Sustainability Park

Թ’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is now studying it as part of research about the Island of Montreal

A rock featuring a white calcite vein in a rare ‘petal’ formation has been extracted from the construction site of the future Թ Sustainability Park.

Attached to a chunk of grey stone, the full rock is the approximate size of a microwave. It was discovered by construction workers north of Pine Avenue.

Bargaining Update – COFAM

On July 8, 2026, Թ and the Confederation of Faculty Associations of Թ (COFAM) held a scheduled bargaining session. During the meeting, the parties continued discussions on a number of collective agreement articles and exchanged views on outstanding issues. The parties reached agreement in principle on two articles and made progress in discussions on several others. A number of matters remain under discussion and will be addressed at future bargaining sessions. The next bargaining session is scheduled for August 5, 2026.

2025 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal

Professor Parisa A. Ariya was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal, an award widely regarded as the most prestigious Canadian distinction recognizing exceptional contributions to meteorology. Meteorology is a broad discipline within the atmospheric sciences and encompasses several specialized research areas, including atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics, dynamic meteorology, hydrology, climatology, and climate change. The award consists of a formal citation, a framed letter, and a gold medal.
