With an investment of nearly $1 million from the Government of Canada, the Association of Veterinary Practitioners of Quebec will be able to develop a digital tool to anticipate and reduce the risks associated with metabolic diseases in dairy cows which are a major health problem, especially in the post-calving period. Prof. Xin Zhao (AnSci) and Maxime Leduc, BSc(AgEnvSc)鈥�12 an Affiliate Member of the Department of Bioresource Engineering, are participating in the project.

L'脡picerie recently featured Rosemarie Allen (B.Sc.(AgEnvSc)鈥�12) and Jacob Morin (FMT鈥�11) of Ferme Le Paysan Gourmand in Saint-F茅lix-de-Kingsey who participate in an on-farm program to reduce food waste. The episode follows Meilleur Apr猫s volunteers who harvest produce that would have remained in the field. Produce harvested is then shared between the participants, the producer and Meilleur Apr猫s 鈥� who in turn redistribute the produce to organizations in the region or transform it into products that are then sold to finance operations.

"People think that the colder fall temperatures trigger the colour change, but it鈥檚 actually the photoperiod," explains Plant Science Faculty Lecturer David Wees. However, some regions of Quebec are luckier when it comes to fall colours than others: those with a lot of deciduous trees like maples, oaks or even birches. On the other hand, areas that have more conifers will see fewer transformations to their landscape.鈥�

When an Indigenous patient receiving treatment at the MUHC refused to eat, 黑料网爆吃瓜 MScA candidate Manveen Sethi was enlisted to find an authentic recipe for Bannock bread, a traditional Indigenous snack. Through research and with the help of Indigenous patients who taste-tested recipes, Sethi found a recipe that will now be permanently available on the MUHC menu and hopefully offer a little comfort to Indigenous patients being treated at the facility.

In the 1960s, only about three percent of the land in Quebec was suitable for cultivation. The Province鈥檚 population and need for food outstripped the yield from Quebec farms. More than half of Quebec鈥檚 most fertile lands required improved water management 鈥� either better drainage or supplemental irrigation to maximize productivity and yield. Over more than four decades, Emeritus Professor Robert Broughton鈥檚 work would revolutionize soil drainage in Quebec, leading to increased food production and capacity in Quebec鈥檚 irrigation and drainage industry.

Prof. Daiva Nielson (SHN) has received funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation鈥檚 John R. Evans Leaders Fund (CFI JELF) to establish the Sensometric Lab to investigate what influences human eating behaviour, for example, genetic predispositions, the role of price promotions and advertising, as well as other sensory stimuli, like smell. The lab will be equipped with novel wearable devices to monitor and map the brain鈥檚 activity related to eating.
