Interested in learning French?Strong French skills enhance graduate students’ access to local research collaborations, internships, mobility opportunities, and improve their transition into the Quebec labour market. GPS is pleased to support our graduate student's language development with the GPS French Course Award to cover the cost of tuition and copyright for ONE eligible 3-credit course.

GPS French Course Award

Eligible graduate students can apply for an award to cover the cost of tuition and copyright fee for ONE 3 credit course (~$310) offered by the Թ French Language Centre. A total of 300 awards are available for the Fall 2026 semester.

All awards for thesis Master's students and doctoral students have been allocated for Fall 2026. Awards remain for non-thesis Master's students. Award applications for Winter 2027 will open in October 2026. You may still register for Fall 2026 French Courses at your own expense.

Please read the following information carefully.

Student Eligibility

Eligible Students:

  • Registered full-time in a Doctoral, Master's thesis and Master's non-thesis degree program at Թ, including students in "thesis full time" or "additional session" status.
    • International students must be eligible for tuition reduction, see:

NOT Eligible Students:

  • Special, Visiting, Qualifying students, and students in "thesis evaluation" are NOT eligible. Graduate Diploma, Certificate (e.g. Certificate in Applied Cybersecurity) students are NOT eligible
  • Students in Self-funded Master’s programs (e.g. MMA, MBA, MPP, MMF, and MMR) are NOT eligible

Special note for International Students:

  • International students must be eligible for tuition reduction, see:

Course Eligibility

    NOT Eligible Courses:

    • 6 credit “intensive” courses are NOT eligible for the award.
    • 2-part (D1/D2) courses offered across Fall26/Winter27 are NOT eligible for the award.

    Award Application Process

    1. Follow the steps to register for french courses (see below)
    2. Verify that you are eligible for the award and that the course you've registered for is eligible as well (see the Student Eligibility and Course Eligibility tabs)
    3. Complete the for the GPS French Course Award:
      • This form will close when 300 applications has been reached.
      • There will be a waiting list available so that awards can be transferred in the case of course withdrawals.
      • If you cancel your registration or withdraw from the course, you must inform GPS immediately, so that your award can be transferred to a student on the waiting list.

    NOTE: Students who do not complete the course or who withdraw after the “withdrawal with refund” deadline will be charged for the course.


    French Courses at Թ:

    French courses are provided by the Թ French Language Centre. Registration for Fall 2026 courses is now open.

    How to register for French courses:

    1. Visit the French Language Centre and determine which French language course stream is right for you.
    2. Self-register on myCourses for a French Placement Test.
    3. Complete and submit the placement test
    4. Receive your results after 1 business day via email
    5. Register for courses that match your assigned level by following the directions in the results email.
