Clinical Faculty – Academic Performance Evaluation

Feedback from learners is central to our academic performance evaluation for clinical faculty. As part of the departmental performance evaluation process, you may be asked for additional information such as a self-evaluation or activity report.

If you are a tenure-track/tenured or other salaried faculty member, additional information about performance evaluation is found on this page.

What if I don’t have any feedback from learners in One45 for the reference year?

If you supervised at least one UGME student, or at least three PGME trainees in the year under review, you should have feedback in One45. If you have supervised fewer trainees for the year in question, the feedback is not released to protect learner confidentiality.

In that case, we encourage you to reflect on your own experience as a supervisor and consider what went well and what you might want to improve on. You can also:

  • Review the available Faculty Development resources (above).
  • Consult with your department Chair, their delegate, or the director of the clinical course that you supervise in (e.g. LFME, TCP) to solicit their feedback on your performance.
How can this feedback support my career development and academic promotion?
  • Clinical supervision is a core responsibility for clinical faculty and a central consideration for your potential promotion to higher ranks in the University.
  • This feedback from learners, your reflections on it, and any steps you may decide to take to enhance your teaching skillset are elements that can strengthen your Teaching Portfolio for eventual promotion. Save this information and add to it every year.
  • Please consult our online resources to learn more or meet with your academic Department Chair or delegate:
How do I interpret this feedback from learners?
  • The larger the number of learners, the more reliable the feedback.
  • Most faculty members receive scores or 4 or 5/5 in most aspects of this evaluation. If those are your scores, you are doing well.
  • If you have a score of 3 or below, we encourage you to reflect on whether you need to change your approach, upgrade you teaching skills through Faculty development resources, or seek advice from your department chair, the course director, or a colleague with more teaching experience.
  • Please review the qualitative comments from learners; they can help you understand what they most appreciate about your teaching, and where you may want to make adjustments.
Will I still be asked to submit a self-evaluation or activities report?
  • This feedback regarding clinical supervision is being provided to all clinical faculty members, full-time and part-time, across the School of Medicine. We ask you to reflect on it, but do not require you to complete a self-evaluation or report your activities.
  • Most departments have a more detailed activity review addressing other aspects of academic work such as classroom teaching, research and service, for full-time faculty and some part-time faculty. This will continue as usual, according to the usual departmental practices, which may include a self-evaluation or other report.
Why did I receive my feedback from UGME learners later this year?
  • The timing for receiving feedback from UGME learners has changed to align with the timing for PGME feedback, to make it easier for you to get a complete picture of your supervisory activities.
  • Feedback from both UGME and PGME learners will be available in early February.
Can I use my preferred email address (e.g. government email) to login to the databases?

No, it is mandatory to use ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï credentials (first.lastname [at] mcgill.ca).

What can I do if I feel my feedback from one or more learners is inaccurate, hateful, or discriminatory?
  • Only you and your academic department chair (or their delegate) see this feedback.
  • If the feedback is factually inaccurate, please inform your department chair. The chair will not be able to remove the feedback from One45 but can make a note in your file.
  • If the feedback contains hateful or discriminatory comments, you can use ºÚÁÏÍø±¬³Ô¹Ï’s Protocol for addressing hateful or discriminatory comments to request that the comment(s) be removed.
